Environmentally Friendly Foam

Ecoflex

Until now, the foam in your upholstery, was made of Petrochemicals; not any more!

Kirkhouse now offer Ecoflex™, a new foam with fantastic qualities. Please ask for details.

The renewable challenge

For anyone who has an interest in furniture and bedding, here’s some news you’ve been waiting for – Ecoflex™ from Duflex Foam Ltd is a new innovation in flexible foam for use in furniture fillings. With consumer demand for products which safeguard the environment at an all time high and large private and public sector organisations being increasingly required to prove their green credentials, many industries face the challenge of maintaining competitiveness and product quality whilst adopting more renewable materials.

Our new castor oil-based Ecoflex™ foam represents just this step for furniture products. It contains 20% renewable resources compared to zero in traditionally manufactured petroleum-based foams, and yet meets UK and European market requirements for comfort, durability, odour and fire safety. It also uses less fossil fuel components in its manufacture, has less impact on the environment, and will be a big hit with end users and anyone scrutinising your renewable targets.

A potted history of castor oil

Humble castor oil had a place in every grandmother’s preserve of home remedies, to be used in the treatment of anything from constipation and acne to sciatica. In fact, its healing history goes back thousands of years but it is now used more widely in medical, cosmetic and many industrial applications.

Ricinus Communis is native to tropical and sub-tropical regions and is pretty enough to be found in ornamental parks and gardens throughout Europe. But it’s the qualities of the oil it produces, alternatively known as castor or veranda oil – viscous, colourless and odourless – that makes it of real interest to us ...

A recipe for success

Through intensive research and development, a completely new catalyst has been applied which enables castor oil to be employed in the production of low emission polyols – the major component of modern furniture foams. With castor oil contributing 30% to the total weight of the polyol, we could at last bring to market a dramatically improved recipe for renewable base

materials. Ecoflex™ contains 20% renewable, vegetable based components, whereas traditional foams have none.

It truly is a blend with nature.

Comfortably better

So where’s the catch? What about the odour problems and flammability issues that have prevented other materials being used for ‘greener’ flexible foams? Can castor oil really succeed where olive, rapeseed and sunflower oils could not? This time the news is all good: Ecoflex™ is the first environmentally credible and technically incredible foam that performs to exceptionally high standards.

When it comes to comfort, durability and safety, there’s no compromise. Ecoflex™ retains the structural characteristics of the best modern foams, has no increased level of odour and meets the stringent UK standards for fire safety. With Ecoflex™ the only noticeable difference is in your

use of renewable materials and a reduced impact upon the environment.
